CMI Builds C-SPAN2 Book TV Bus
(COLUMBUS, OH) – How does a non-profit cable
network with limited marketing funds promote a key block of specialized weekly
programming? That was the challenge facing C-SPAN2 recently when it wanted to
attract more viewers to Book TV, the network’s weekly 48-hour coverage of
non-fiction books and authors. The company opted to revamp one of their
distinctive yellow school buses and have Creative Mobile Interiors (CMI) convert
it into an attention-getting new mobile marketing vehicle. The unit will now
promote Book TV at
book fairs, libraries and bookstores across the country.
“CMI has been working with
C-SPAN2 for several years, but this is the first time we’ve done such a major
retrofit. This Book Bus is a first for them,” said Owen Connaughton, president
of Creative Mobile Interiors.
The 45-ft. MCI DL3 houses broadcast recording and editing equipment. The front
lounge is a state-of-the-art studio set, with four illuminated poster boxes that
serve as on-camera backdrops. Opposite the backdrops are fold-down leather
benches built into copper nebula laminate cabinets. The studio lounge holds
three monitor trees that hold a total of seven 17-inch monitors. The monitors
function as televisions, computer screens or TelePrompTers. The center of the
front lounge is dominated by a 42-inch plasma television. For durability, the
studio lounge features dazzlewood vinyl flooring and copper nebula laminate
walls with Corian accents on the windowsills. When visitors come aboard for
tours, the monitors will show an interactive demonstration about Book TV
programming.

Separating the studio lounge from the engineering area are 3 ¾-inch acrylic
sliding doors. The engineering area includes dozens of pieces of electronic
equipment, such as DVD players, audio/video receivers, switchers and digital
editing equipment. The rear of the unit features a galley area with a microwave
and refrigerator, ample storage space and restroom and make-up area for on-air
talent.
The unit’s exterior features a full graphic wrap with the C-SPAN2 Book TV logo
and book-themed artwork. A 42-inch plasma television faces outside to draw
attention, and can broadcast what is going on inside the bus. There are three
rooftop air conditioning units and one Girard awning with Fiberglass fairings
(tapered edge pieces that make the awnings more aerodynamic and attractive). CMI
also rebuilt the unit’s side rear door, switching from aluminum to stainless
steel for more durability.
CMI was founded in 1999 and is headquartered in four plants totaling 21,000
square feet in Grove City, Ohio. The company specializes in converting motor
